YORKSHIRE+TEA

I'm unable to post my final design for this brief at this moment in time as it is being entered into a design competition in a month or so, but here's some very early development work that didn't go any further than this, but I'm still fond of it. All you need to know is it was for Yorkshire* Tea**.

Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2014

October 2014

If you read it, you can (try) design a cover for it

After my previous post about my greatest passion in life it seemed only right to post my redesign of the cover of "Gone Girl". At the time of designing this piece I think the book was relatively unknown, but at the time of writing it's become HUGELY popular after it was successfully adapted for the big screen (which admittedly I was convinced I would hate with a passion). After much deliberation I went to see it and I was absolutely blown away. However, and there's always a however, there was several things missing from the book but that is sadly something the book lover has to come to terms with. One of these missing elements was the use of blue envelopes by the protagonist, which was the main visual feature of my design. Nevermind, it was in the book and everyone knows the book is always better.

This was a quick piece which took me 2 hours including prep time

Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?

Whenever I'm not glued to my Macbook (I know, I know but it's the student designer life) I like to stick my head in a book and get completely lost. Be that for 2 pages or 200 pages, it doesn't matter. Each to their own but I just find it difficult to understand how people can just not like reading, or say it's boring. I think that I may just be biased as it is my favourite hobby (is it a hobby?) though.

Currently on my to-read list:
The New Republic – Lionel Shriver
Someone Like You – Roald Dahl
The Bell Jar – Sylvia Plath
The Fault In Our Stars – John Green
Editorial Design: Digital and Print – Cath Caldwell and Yolanda Zappaterra
Basics Design 07: Grids – Gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris
Jurassic Park – Michael Crichton
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children – Ransom Riggs
Saga – Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples

What I'm currently reading or rereading:
Girl, Interrupted – Susanna Kaysen
Mockingjay – Suzanne Collins
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – J.K. Rowling

Basically reading is good and more people should do it, if only so that I can start a book club.

National Vegetarian Week 2014 – event publicity

One of my first art directed style pieces. I loved doing this project as I could easily manipulate the subject, and my only digital process was the photography (aside from the leaflet, but shh!)

Sometimes I try to draw

These images were created using Illustrator to manipulate fineliner drawings I had done several months beforehand. I'm still pretty pleased with the result, drawing is definitely something I need to get into doing more of. My worst nightmare is becoming a slave to my Macbook.

I love brooches (trinkets, duh!), and digging through my Nana's collection I found this beauty. You can't beat a good Cameo, hopefully I'll have an extensive collection one day.

And that's just a lolly.

Hello :)
My name is Derrian and I'm pretty new to this blogging thingamajig. I'm a graphic designer and full time tea drinker, currently in my 3rd year at the University of Cumbria in Carlisle.

I work mainly in digital for print, but have a love for anything handmade or crafty. This blog is a place for anything that I'm working on, work that I've done, things that I find interesting and new designers/artists I've come across.

Although I'm a creative, not everything will be design related as strangely enough I do have other interests. For example, I'm an avid reader, Pixar lover, and a magpie for trinkets.

Please feel free to contact me if you so wish – commissions and collaborations welcome.
